  seriously, it’s getting to a point that you can’t make a negative comment about someone without being charged as a racist, homophobe or sexist!

  if you criticize a female, you are obviously sexist.

  if you criticize someone who happens to be gay, you must hate homosexuals.

  On the subject of “the squad”: Honestly, the president Tweeting "why don't they go back" and fix their shithole countries is about as stupid and inarticulate as a bunch of celebrities claiming that they're so upset with the outcome of the election that they’re going to ‘leave the country’ and go live in Europe or Canada for 4 years.

  Whether it's the celebs or the prez (and remember the prez is both!) it's all a bunch of petty self-aggrandizing nonsense. Do any of these words from any of these people accomplish anything? NOPE!

  In my line of work, I regularly criticize black, white, hispanic, gay, straight, muslim, christian, jewish and many other combinations of ethnicity/gender/religion/etc..
  

  I have never once been called "racist" -- even by those I've criticized -- and no one has ever accused me of using racist speech.

  So I don't think the problem is criticism here. . .

  Why is it so important to them to let child molesters go out in the field ministry?

  what's up with the watchtower society still letting those they know to have sexually abused children go out in the field service despite that being crucial to the ruling against them in the conti suit?

  they don't let men with beards go out in the field service in america with the justification that "beards are not the custom" and that therefore they "are not considered acceptable for christian ministers," but having sexually abused a child is somehow acceptable for a christian minister?.

  last i checked molesting children isn't considered socially acceptable according to the customs of the united states and certainly finding out that child molesters are allowed to be jehovah's witness publishers is a whole lot more alienating to potential converts than them seeing jehovah's witness publishers with beards.

  anyone any idea if there have been any repercussions over whiskygate and if anthony morris was ushered into the backroom after a meeting?

  i am pretty sure if this had been a member of the r&f and the video was all over the internet, something would have been said about being careful not to bring jah's organization into disrepute.

  i am sure the local elders in the congregation he is assigned to wouldn't have the balls to do it and there would have to be a mole pretty high up to find out if the gb got involved.. we can but speculate i guess..

  at some point, the people whose re-ligions were destroyed may resent thefact that jehovah’s witnesses keep prac-ticing their religion.

  we had a nice long talk and i brought up some things that make me think that this isn't the "truth" and she somewhat agreed with me.

  i stuck with things i personally experienced or had knowledge of plus all the changes in recent years.

  she agreed on a lot of the points but still believes in god and the bible.

  Why not go for a day out one Sunday, go for lunch somewhere nice, show the alternative life you could be living instead of the usual slog.

  just though i'd start a thread devoted to languages, dialects/sociolects and accents, with the idea being that posters can comment on any language, or dialect or accent of any language, on this thread.. any phrases, expressions or idioms that you find interesting are also welcome.

  first, the subject of english accents came up on another thread.. the british isles have many different types of accent (although many of the dialects may be dying out), and if i start to take a closer look, i can't help but see 'patterns' .... in received pronunciation of standard english, the letter r is pronounced initially, between vowels, and after consonants, e.g.

  red, arrow, break.

  It is quite technical but has to do with how listeners deal with speaker variability, including dialect.

  Abstract

  One of the persistent puzzles in understanding human speech perception is how listeners cope with talker variability. One thing that might help listeners is structure in talker variability: rather than varying randomly, talkers of the same gender, dialect, age, etc. tend to produce language in similar ways. Listeners are sensitive to this covariation between linguistic variation and socio-indexical variables. In this paper I present new techniques based on ideal observer models to quantify 1) the amount and type of structure in talker variation (informativity of a grouping variable), and 2) how useful such structure can be for robust speech recognition in the face of talker variability (the utility of a grouping variable). I demonstrate these techniques in two phonetic domains—word-initial stop voicing and vowel identity—and show that these domains have different amounts and types of talker variability, consistent with previous, impressionistic findings.
